It’s very easy to open an Australian bank account from the UK before you move to Australia. I opened one with NAB. There was a short form to fill in online and the bank account details were sent to me instantly. They also assigned an account rep to me who followed up by email.
When I was still in the UK I could transfer money in to the account but I could not take any out until I arrived in Australia and went along to a NAB branch with my passport. It took about ten minutes to get everything sorted. They asked me if I also wanted a credit card. I wasn’t sure if I would be able to get one as I had no credit history in the country. They typed away for a bit and then told me I could have one but I’d have to bring in proof of salary. A salary slip or my contract of work was enough.
